The Olweus Committee is proposing to have a student-teacher panel discussion session or sessions during the Learning Together 2016 Conference. In past years panel discussions have been held to help bridge the gap between teachers and students and to improve communication and understanding. The theme of the discussions will be based on the question, “How do we define bullying differently”?

The goal, this year, is to build upon the past efforts and to continue building a sense of community even as LTISD continues its fast paced growth. To that end, instead of having students sit behind a long table with an audience of teachers on the other side, students and teachers will break into smaller groups with each smaller group having a set conversation starters and scenarios to guide the discussions.

The idea is to allow more students and teachers to interact with each other. The end goal is two-fold:
1. Help students and teachers understand how each other defines and see bullying through the use of the conversation starters and presented scenarios.
2. Help students convey to teachers how they want teachers, the school administration, and the district to respond to bullying.

It is important for faculty, staff, and students to have a comfort level that allows deep, valid, and continuing communication. To have this all stake-holders need to have a common understanding of the issues and solutions.
